Bill Gates drinks water distilled from human faeces

Bill Gates has drunk a glass of water made from human faeces, to showcase technology he said could provide clean water in the developing world.

The Microsoft founder said he wanted to begin sending processing plants around the world after tests later this year.

The project was welcomed by WaterAid, which said that it could particularly help in urban areas.

According to the charity, some 748 million people worldwide lack clean drinking water.

In a video posted on his blog, Mr Gates watched as the human waste was fed into the processor, before drinking the end product from a glass.

‘Sewer sludge’

“The water tasted as good as any I’ve had out of a bottle. And having studied the engineering behind it, I would happily drink it every day. It’s that safe,” he wrote in the blogpost.

In the video, the developer of the Omniprocessor system, Peter Janicki, says the raw “sewer sludge” is first boiled, during which process the water vapour is separated from the solids.

Those solids are then put into a fire, producing steam that drives an engine producing electricity for the system’s processor and for the local community.

The water is put through a cleaning system to produce drinking water.

“Why would anyone want to turn waste into drinking water and electricity?” Gates asked.

The answer, he wrote, was because “diseases caused by poor sanitation kill some 700,000 children every year, and they prevent many more from fully developing mentally and physically”.

He added: “If we can develop safe, affordable ways to get rid of human waste, we can prevent many of those deaths and help more children grow up healthy.”

Sustainable services

According to a report released by the World Health Organization and Unicef in 2013, data collected two years earlier showed that 2.5 billion people worldwide lacked “improved sanitation facilities”.

Figures from WaterAid suggest that the number of people in the world without access to safe water has fallen by about 20 million since then.

The charity said that the technology could “first and foremost benefit those who already have some access to sanitation, rather than those without”.

“If the technology can be rolled out at a scale that makes it viable for smaller investors or entrepreneurs, then this could be a catalyst for changing the sanitation landscape in urban areas in the developing world,” said its sanitation technical support manager, Ada Oko-Williams.

WaterAid said the introduction of this type of plant could “help to facilitate the need to complete the sanitation cycle, by creating a market for the creation of a sustainable services around the safe collection, transportation, treatment, disposal, and indeed reuse of human waste”.

‘Seed money’

Mr Gates said that a pilot of the Omniprocessor was due to go ahead in Senegal later this year and that he hoped to begin sending working plants to India and other countries soon after.

“If we get it right, it will be a good example of how philanthropy can provide seed money that draws bright people to work on big problems, eventually creating a self-supporting industry.

“Our goal is to make the processors cheap enough that entrepreneurs in low- and middle-income countries will want to invest in them and then start profitable waste-treatment businesses.”

But he acknowledged that “the history of philanthropy is littered with well-intentioned inventions that never deliver on their promise”, adding that he hoped the planning undertaken on the Omniprocessor project would mean that it did not join this list.

The project was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Limbu from Nepal won UK writing contest with a poem about the shock of life in Britain

A pupil from Nepal named Mukahang Limbu has won a Sunday Times-backed writing contest with a poem about the shock of life in Britain
mukahang limbu     Mukahang Limbu receives first prize for his poem from the Princess of Wales Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall

A 13-year-old schoolboy who moved to England after spending his early childhood in Nepal has become the first winner of national writing competition sponsored by The Sunday Times.

Mukahang Limbu’s poem, about the shock of adapting to life in Britain, was one of more than 3,000 poems and stories on the theme of “home” submitted by state school pupils. The contest was organised by the charity First Story and judged by a panel including the writers William Fiennes and Laura Dockrill. Mukahang’s prize was presented by the Duchess of Cornwall.

First Story was set up seven years ago to bring writers into state schools to work with underprivileged children and encourage their creative writing.

Every year a writer-in-residence runs after-school workshops encouraging pupils to write about their experiences. The charity is working in almost 50 schools in the East Midlands, Gloucestershire, Lancashire, London, Oxfordshire and West Yorkshire.

His poem:

When I came from Nepal

As I clutched my suitcase …

thick hot sweat

built in the slits

of my palms, which

shook holding its cool

metal brace. We walked

into day-winds, thick

as dried out paint

on unwashed canvas.

The sky was painted

daffodil yellow. The ground

was a dirty grey.

There was a metal bird:

an array of fearful,

forgotten paint

**

Missing the feeling of home

I smell the iron rust

of the Municipal Gardens.

The sour tang of home still

sits on the tip of my tongue

like the zest of sweet citrus

fizzing

**

I did not know

of grey, gravel roads,

or the bright buzzing

of scarlet cars.

I did not know

of lonely red-bricked

houses,

gazing strangers,

standing next to next,

military officers, in endless

I did not know

of silence in the streets,

or the secret whispers on

the buses,

or the sly gestures of

I know now

In this place

where I did not know,

the things I did not know

embrace me in ways

I didn’t know.

Mukahang Limbu.

Happy International Women’s day 2015

$

For most of you this sort of wishes could be enough, however; millions and millions women from different parts of the world, this day could mean something more than this due to various functions and commitments for them from different leaders and activists. They work more than men, but they are exploited, abused and violated by men. Somewhere they cannot eat whenever they want – they need to wait until their husband and other male members in the family come and eat first. Even they have to suppress their feelings. They are like toys and machines for men. This is the real situation of millions and millions of women in different parts of the world.

History:

For more than a century, March 8th has been the day to commemorate and celebrate the fight of working class and revolutionary women for a better deal and a socialist society. Its origins are in the struggles for equal pay and decent conditions amongst women in the USA in the 19th century.

On March 8, 1857, garment workers in New York City marched and picketed, demanding improved working conditions, a ten hour day, and equal rights for women. Their ranks were broken up by the police. Fifty-one years later, March 8, 1908, their sisters in the needle trades in New York marched again, honouring the 1857 march, demanding the vote, and an end to sweatshops and child labour. The police were present on this occasion too.

A conference in 1910 of socialist women involved in the Second International, adopted a proposal of the German revolutionary fighter, Klara Zetkin, to establish an International Women’s Day. Russian women began to observe this on the last Sunday in February, according to the pre-revolutionary Julien calendar.

In 1917 this was the day the working women of Petrograd literally started a revolution. In protest at rising prices and food shortages, they filed into the centre of the city, calling on all  fellow workers to join them. This was actually March 8th according to the (Gregorian) calendar used elsewhere in the world.’Down with hunger!’ ‘Down with the war!’ Hunger was claiming the lives of thousands of children, along with those of older men and women, and the very sick and very poor. The First World War was claiming the lives of millions of farm labourers and workers at the front. The ‘February Revolution’ of 1917, which threw off the yoke of Csarism across the Russian Empire, was the precursor of the victorious socialist revolution of October in the same year.

Scenario in the 21st Century:

For most of you this sort of wishes could be enough, however; millions and millions women from different parts of the world, this day could mean something more than this due to various functions and commitments for them from different leaders and activists. They work more than men, but they are exploited, abused and violated by men. Somewhere they cannot eat whenever they want – they need to wait until their husband and other male members in the family come and eat first. Even they have to suppress their feelings. They are like toys and machines for men. This is the real situation of millions and millions of women in different parts of the world.

Solution:

Everything seems to be separate, but they are interlinked each other in many ways, so any incident in any part of the world could affect others in different ways depending upon its nature. Many activists, therefore, raising their voice for Balanced Development to minimize different social problems, but, undoubtedly, this is not an easy job.

As long as outmoded ways of thinking prevent women from making a meaningful contribution to society, progress will be slow. As long as the world refuses to acknowledge the equal role of more than half of itself, it is ruined to failure. Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women is, therefore, very important to go furthermore and make the world really civilized. Commitments assist us in our task, because they allow us to draw on the experience and the victories of women across the world. Your any sort of support, activities and even thinking in this regard may change the situation of the world.

Let me wish Equal Power and Glory to the Women of the world. Only this could make the world more Peaceful and enjoyable.

I would like to wish my best wishes on the occasion of International Women’s day 2015.

Have a magnificent year with unexpected achievements.

Ram Kumar Shrestha

richwomen_620x348The BRW Rich Women list is dotted with household names, from Nicole Kidman to Michelle Bridges and Baker’s Delight to Boost Juice.

But few people have heard of the woman at the top – reclusive Vicky Teoh.

Teoh has been the richest self-made woman in Australia every year since the publication of the first Rich Women list in 2013. This year her personal fortune is estimated at $938 million.

Australia’s Richest self-made women (Net wealth $m)

Richest women

Teoh and her husband, David, emigrated from Malaysia in the 1980s and founded TPG Telecom. Teoh owns a big chunk of TPG shares in her own right and is also active in the family’s investments in start-ups such as online spectacles retailer Oscar Wylee.

The BRW Rich Women list, published to celebrate International Women’s Day, highlights the 30 wealthiest self-made women in Australia. To be eligible, the women must have contributed to the creation of their wealth, and not have inherited any significant sum from the previous generation. Mining magnate Gina Rinehart is excluded because of her inheritance from her father, Lang Hancock, despite her phenomenal success in business.

The women on the list have a combined wealth of $5.4 billion, up from $4.5 billion in 2014, and most individuals saw gains.

There are four entertainers: Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue, Elle Macpherson and Cate Blanchett. The corporate high-flyers include former Westpac boss Gail Kelly, mining executive Ines Scotland, Harvey Norman boss Katie Page, and Macquarie Bank executive Shemara Wikramanayake.

But 22 of the 30 women on the list – from Nutrimetics co-founder Imelda Roche at 80 to Carman’s Fine Foods owner Carolyn Creswell at 41 – earned their fortune by founding and building their own businesses, in diverse industries such as fashion, food and hotels, either alone or with a partner.

Baker’s Delight joint chief executive Lesley Gillespie, who started the business with her husband, Roger, is on the list with $75 million. The couple started with one bakery in Melbourne in 1980 and now have 700 stores in Australia, New Zealand and Canada through a franchise model. Baker’s Delight will open its first US store in Connecticut this June.

“My main aim when we first started was that we would have enough money to choose which schools to send our children to,” Gillespie says. “It’s nice to have that choice and it’s nice to be in a position where Roger and I are able to be philanthropic because we have the cash flow.”

Brisbane-based Sarina Russo, worth about $103 million, is a solo entrepreneur in the employment and training sector and a property investor. Russo believes that entrepreneurship can solve unemployment and is particularly good for women.

“Nothing is greater than having options and choices in life and women today can have those choices,” Russo says. “If you can evolve into financial independence it’s a great start to giving you extraordinary choices and it empowers you.”

Boost Juice founder Janine Allis, who stars as one of the “sharks” on TEN’s reality show Shark Tank, is on the list with $66 million. Allis opened her first juice bar in Adelaide in 2000 and her business empire now includes Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill, Cibo Espresso and Hatch as well as Boost Juice. Allis made money last year when private equity investor Bain Capital bought into the business, but her family still owns a big stake.

Allis says she would encourage other women to start their own businesses, though she warns work-life balance is non-existent in the early years.

“If what I’ve done can inspire other women to give it a go that would be a great thing – my view is that women are very clever and we can create and smash whatever glass ceiling is there,” Allis says.

Lisa Wilkinson to reclaim the Natarsha Belling ‘penis jacket’ on Today

Je suis Scanlan: Lisa Wilkinson wants TV hosts to wear the infamous 'penis jacket' on Thursday.

Je suis Scanlan: Lisa Wilkinson wants TV hosts to wear the infamous ‘penis jacket’ on Thursday.

Thought you had seen the last of the “penis jacket”? Think again, the Veronica Corningstone of Australian media, Lisa Wilkinson, has declared she will be flashing it on screen for Today viewers.

Wilkinson took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to issue a rallying cry not seen since that fight scene in Anchorman 2 to her “TV host” counterparts, requesting them to not be shy about their sartorial choices on air. Even during family friendly breakfast television.

In a bid to reclaim the Nine exclusive, Wilkinson will wear the $550 crepe jacket with peplum hem and provocative neckline this morning.

But not every Tom, Dick and Harry in TV land has listened. So far only her public broadcasting comrades appear to have gotten the “On Thursdays we wear nutty blazers” obiter dictum.

ABC News 24 reporter Kirsten Aiken replied, “The memo” and retweeted Wilkinson’s wily request.

That escalated quickly: Ten's Natarsha Belling wearing the jacket over the weekend.© UNILAD That escalated quickly: Ten’s Natarsha Belling wearing the jacket over the weekend.

Fellow ABC journalist Charlotte Hamlyn may not be as keen. Considering she’s already worn it in four different colours.

The jacket, by local fashion label Scanlan Theodore, shot to fame and went viral after Channel Ten newsreader Natarsha Belling wore it during a weekend news bulletin.

Meanwhile Today has become an excitable hotbed of social activism.

Last year Karl Stefanovic admitted to wearing the same “knock off Burberry suit” on air for a year.

“I’ve worn the same suit on air for a year – except for a couple of times because of circumstance – to make a point,” he told Fairfax Media. “Women are judged much more harshly and keenly for what they do, what they say and what they wear.”

Shortly after that Wilkinson savaged the film version of Fifty Shades of Grey.

“With a script that makes Mills & Boon read like bleedin’ Dickens, and lines like, ‘I don’t do romance’, Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey is the 30-something jerk of a billionaire who never seems to work. An emotionally crippled narcissist no-one could love,” she said.

“Yes, Fifty Shades of Grey is more appalling than appealing. It’s domestic violence dressed up as erotica…and if there’s one thing this movie is not, it’s erotic.”

Come Thursday all eyes will be back on Wilkinson and newsreader Sylvia Jeffreys, not to mention arch rivals Samantha Armytage and Natalie Barr over on Sunrise who may pitch in and support the sisterhood.

No word yet if other members of breakfast television, Stefanovic and David “Kochie” Koch, will join their female co-hosts in Thursday’s fashionable morning glory.

[ This is a ‘secret draft proposal’ forwarded by the Government of India to then His Majesty’s Government of Nepal  for security, water resource management and  industry and commerce also. The slain King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev is reported to have rejected this proposal. For that matter, Nepalese people should heartily thank the slain king. The proposal, though soft in language, is extremely cruel and dangerous in substance and meaning. Had the King  told his men to sign on the proposal, Nepal’s  military would have been paralyzed, sovereignty and independence would have been compromised, ownership of water resource would have been lost and big Indian business houses would have swallowed up Nepalese business entrepreneurs etc. There are these days loud talks in Kathmandu or elsewhere that Nepal in Bhutan’s shoes is morphing into a present day Sikkim. This, therefore, is posted for discussion.]

Princess Diana left how much to Prince William and Prince Harry?

DianaPrincess Diana died almost 18 years ago, but her final wishes were never known publicly… until now.

A new British website called Probate Search has revealed not only Diana’s will, but 41 million other wills dating back to 1858. Diana’s will, naturally, is among the most interesting.

According to the “Today” show, Diana left close to $30 million to her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. She also instructed that her mother, Frances Shand Kydd, should be consulted about the boys’ education in the event of her death.

“She wanted to make sure [her children] were showered with love,” Robert Jobson, author of “The New Royal Family,” told “Today.” “That’s something she really agonized over when she split from Prince Charles. I think this will reflects that.”

Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996 when both William and Harry were teenagers.

Diana’s iconic wedding dress, which features thousands of pearls and a 25-foot train, was also left to her sons. Other items, including paintings and a clock, were bequeathed to Diana’s 17 godchildren. Her will also instructed that $80,000 tax-free should be left to her butler and confidant, Paul Burrell.

The new British site also features wills from other famous Brit’s, including Winston Churchill and George Orwell. The site requires a subscription fee of $15.

Magnitude-7.9 quake hits Nepal, causing big damage, injuries

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A powerful, 7.9-magnitude earthquake shook Nepal’s capital and the densely populated Kathmandu Valley before noon Saturday, collapsing houses, leveling centuries-old temples and cutting open roads in the worst tremor in the Himalayan nation in over 80 years.

eq2

Dozens of people with injuries were being brought to the main hospital in central Kathmandu. There was no immediate estimate on fatalities. China’s state broadcaster said one Chinese tourist was killed in Nepal at the Nepal-China border.

The earthquake also shook several cities across northern India, and was felt as far away as Lahore in Pakistan. The epicenter was 80 kilometers (49 mile) northwest of Kathmandu.

EQ

Several buildings collapsed in the center of the capital, the ancient Old Kathmandu, including centuries-old temples and towers, said resident Prachanda Sual. Among them was the Dharahara Tower, one of Kathmandu’s landmarks built by Nepal’s royal rulers in the 1800s and a UNESCO-recognized historical monument. It was reduced to rubble and there were reports of people trapped underneath.

Old Kathmandu city is a warren of tightly packed, narrow lanes with poorly constructed homes piled on top of each other.

Sual said he saw people running through the streets in panic. Ambulance sirens blared and government helicopters hovered overhead.

National radio warned people to stay outdoors and maintain calm because more aftershocks were feared. A 6.6-magnitude aftershock hit about an hour after the initial quake.

Dozens of people were gathered in the parking lot of Kathmandu’s Norvic International Hospital, where thin mattresses had been spread on the ground for patients rushed outside, some patients wearing hospital pajamas, while doctors and nurses were treating people. A woman with a bandage on her head sat in a set of chairs pulled from the hospital waiting room.

Doctors and nurses had hooked up some patients to IV drops in the parking lot, or were giving people oxygen.

Nepal’s Information Minister Minendra Rijal told India’s NDTV station that there are reports of damage in and around Kathmandu but no immediate word on casualties. He said rescue teams were on the scene.

The Kathmandu Valley is densely populated with nearly 2.5 million people, and the quality of buildings is often poor.

An Associated Press reporter in Kathmandu said a wall in his compound collapsed and there was damage to nearby buildings.

The U.S. Geological Survey revised the magnitude from 7.5 to 7.9 and said the quake hit at 11:56 a.m. local time (0611 GMT) at Lamjung a shallow depth of 11 kilometers (7 miles). An earthquake’s magnitude increases by 10 times with each increase in the number. A magnitude 7 quake is capable of widespread and heavy damage while an 8 magnitude quake can cause tremendous damage.

Mohammad Shahab, a resident from Lahore, Pakistan, said he was sitting in his office when the earthquake rocked the city near the border with India.

He said the tremors continued for a while but now the situation was normal.

The sustained quake also was felt in India’s capital of New Delhi. AP reporters in Indian cities of Lucknow in the north and Patna in the east also reported strong tremors.

Nepal suffered its worst recorded earthquake in 1934, which measured 8.0 and all but destroyed the cities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan.

Nepal_Earthquake_Relief_FundThis time the whole world thoughts are with the people of Nepal in the aftermath of the brawny earthquake ((7.9-8.0 Richter Scale Magnitudes) that has struck most of the part of Nepal at 11.56 AM (07:56 AM GMT) on 25th April, 2015. After that there are series of small and big earthquakes.

Thousands of lives have been lost.   There has also been significant damage to Nepal’s most of irreplaceable amazing cultural heritage and some of bridges are collapsed: Roads, electricity, water supply and telephone lines are disrupted. The reports of the devastation are terrible and still coming in and the numbers of people killed, injured and affected by this earthquake continue to rise.

It is estimated that 2.8 million Nepalese are displaced, as over 70,000 are believed to be destroyed and another 530,000 homes damaged across the 39 of 75 districts. UNICEF estimates 1.3 million children are in urgent need of aid.

Foreign aid, which was already vital to Nepal’s struggling economy, had become even more important now for its efforts to come out of the devastation caused by this massive earthquake.

Nepal has been well known for its rich culture, a tourist haven, and mountaineering destination with the amazing Sherpas assisting many adventurers from all over the globe up the highest mountain in the world, Mt Everest for thousands of travellers each year.  Hopefully, all the people in the world will be touched by the devestation and lend a hand to the people of Nepal.

In this grave situation, we humbly appeal to all communities, donors, Doctors, Red Cross and other humanitarian organisations, politicians to provide immediate support for fundamental basic human needs by sending national medical and rescue teams to Nepal to help prevent an epidemic of disease.  The country will need intermediate and long term support also. The recovery from such a horrendous event will take many long years.

If there’s anything stronger than Natural forces though, it will always be the will of the human spirit to join together and overcome adversity.

Let’s all pray for the victims.

On behalf of Geelong Nepalese Association, we express our deepest condolences to everyone affected, particularly to the families and friends of those killed and injured. I would like to request all Association activists to contribute from their place and capacity in this critical moment. May God grant strength, courage, comfort, and assistance to victims’ families and loved ones, injured, rescuers and aid workers.

We would like to thank you all for your all kinds of support and sympathy in this tough time.

If you want to help, you could use the details given in the poster.

Your donations will be given directly to be local agencies in the most affected area.  We are aware that some government organisations have in the past been unreliable in passing on the money to the people who require the help.  Our Organisation will ensure this does not occur.

Obama, Osama and Lies: Osama bin Laden was killed with help of Pakistanis

osama-blames-us-for-global-warmingU.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden with the full cooperation of Pakistani intelligence agencies, who had kept the 9/11 mastermind prisoner inside his infamous Abbottabad compound for years before the fatal raid, a new bombshell report claims.

The report, a lengthy article by investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, widely contradicts multiple elements of the original account of the May 2011 raid by U.S. forces provided by the Obama administration and other federal government figures.

“The White House still maintains that the mission was an all-American affair, and that the senior generals of Pakistan’s army and Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI) were not told of the raid in advance. This is false, as are many other elements of the Obama administration’s account,” Hersh wrote in the 10,000-word expose published online Sunday on the London Review of Books website.

“The most blatant lie was that Pakistan’s two most senior military leaders — General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, chief of the army staff, and General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, director general of the ISI — were never informed of the US mission. This remains the White House position despite an array of reports that have raised questions,” Hersh wrote, adding that he had unearthed the following new pieces of information:

“(B)in Laden had been a prisoner of the ISI at the Abbottabad compound since 2006 … Kayani and Pasha knew of the raid in advance and had made sure that the two helicopters delivering the Seals to Abbottabad could cross Pakistani airspace without triggering any alarms … that the CIA did not learn of bin Laden’s whereabouts by tracking his couriers, as the White House has claimed since May 2011, but from a former senior Pakistani intelligence officer who betrayed the secret in return for much of the $25 million reward offered by the US, and that, while Obama did order the raid and the Seal team did carry it out, many other aspects of the administration’s account were false.”

U.S. officials, including President Obama, have repeatedly maintained that the Navy SEALS operation to take out bin Laden in 2011 was conducted without the help of Pakistan’s special forces and without notifying the Pakistani government beforehand.

Hersh said his primary source for most of the extraordinary revelations was a “a retired senior intelligence official who was knowledgeable about the initial intelligence about bin Laden’s presence in Abbottabad.”

If true, the allegations could pose serious credibility problems for the White House — and 2016 White House hopeful Hillary Clinton, who was secretary of state during the time of the raid — as it continues to deal with delicate counter-terrorism operations across the world.

Throughout his account, Hersh maintains, as many skeptics of the account have in recent years, that it “just made no sense that bin Laden was living in Abbottabad,” a military stronghold that is home to the nation’s equivalent of the West Point military academy, without the help of the Pakistanis.

Obama, Hersh wrote, doubted that special forces could carry out any kind of assault on the terrorist’s purported compound without help from Pakistan.

“The only way to accomplish both things, the retired official said, ‘was to get the Pakistanis on board,’” Hersh wrote.

U.S. intelligence services gradually collected information about the compound, until they were able to eventually prove that bin Laden had lived there with help from ISI.

“The compound was not an armed enclave — no machine guns around, because it was under ISI control,” Hersh wrote.

Bin Laden had lived undetected in the Hindu Kush mountains that straddle northern Pakistan and southern Afghanistan from 2001 to 2006, until the ISI “got to him by paying some of the local tribal people to betray him,” Hersh wrote.

ISI then hid bin Laden in the Abbottabad compound for years, keeping his presence a secret, but using him to “keep tabs on al Qaeda and the Taliban,” a source told Hersh.

“The ISI was using bin Laden as leverage against Taliban and al Qaeda activities inside Afghanistan and Pakistan,” Hersh wrote.

But in 2010, the U.S. began learning of bin Laden’s whereabouts, and months later, CIA officials began bringing a small number of Pakistani officials into the planning of the potential operation.

“It didn’t take long to get the co-operation we needed, because the Pakistanis wanted to ensure the continued release of American military aid, a good percentage of which was anti-terrorism funding that finances personal security,” a source told Hersh.

American and Pakistani officials bargained for weeks over how the mission would be carried out, and the Pakistanis proved instrumental in providing intelligence, in the final agreement, that allowed the raid to occur successfully.

“At the Abbottabad compound ISI guards were posted around the clock to keep watch over bin Laden and his wives and children. They were under orders to leave as soon as they heard the rotors of the US helicopters,” Hersh wrote.

“An ISI liaison officer flying with the Seals guided them into the darkened house and up a staircase to bin Laden’s quarters. The Seals had been warned by the Pakistanis that heavy steel doors blocked the stairwell on the first and second-floor landings; bin Laden’s rooms were on the third floor,” Hersh alleged, citing his sources.

After bin Laden was shot and killed during the raid, White House officials contended that his body was brought to the U.S.S. Carl Vinson, possibly in the Indian Ocean, for a burial at sea that was conducted in accordance with Muslim law.

Again, Hersh contended that the administration lied.

“Within weeks of the raid, I had been told by two longtime consultants to Special Operations Command, who have access to current intelligence, that the funeral aboard the Carl Vinson didn’t take place,” he wrote.

“One consultant told me that bin Laden’s remains were photographed and identified after being flown back to Afghanistan. The consultant added: ‘At that point, the CIA took control of the body,” Hersh wrote.

Hersh has aggressively accused the U.S. of lying about its account of the death of bin Laden since 2013, after he began investigating the ordeal.

“Not one word of it is true,” Hersh told The Guardian newspaper in a September 2013 interview meant to drum up publicity for a new book.

Ruble-yuan settlements booming, set to reshape global finance

Settlements in local currencies between Russia and China now account for 7 percent of the bilateral trade, but the potential for growth is tremendous, experts tell RT. Yuan-ruble trade in Russia has grown 700 percent in a year.

Growing cooperation between Russia and China has become one of the hottest topics in the global economy. It is signaling the emergence of a strong alliance of one the world’s richest and strongest economies, which is expected to reshape the existing western-dominated economic model.

While energy deals between the resource – rich Russia and resource – hungry China look natural, bringing the countries’ finances closer looks like a real challenge to the US dollar system, experts agree, although the transition won’t be quick.

“The transition from the usual scheme of payments in major currencies is not a quick process, but with a certain political will and sufficient mechanisms of hedging currency risks in exports and imports it is quite feasible,” Aleksandr Prosviryakov, Treasuries & Commodities Manager at PWC, told RT. He added that the first step towards this was the signing of a three-year agreement on currency swap worth 150 billion yuan in October 2014.

Currency swaps allow companies in both countries to use national currencies in mutual settlements. That means the Russian importers can purchase Chinese products with yuan, and the Chinese can make payments in rubles.

“We see a pretty rapid intensification of trade in the yuan-ruble currency pair in Russia,” he said adding that the volume on the Moscow Exchange increased by 8 times in comparison with the previous year, and 6 times in the OTC market.
Prosviryakov said the agreement to supply Russian oil to China through the Eastern Siberia – Pacific Ocean pipeline was the first major project implemented through settlement in local currencies.

An increased use of national currencies by major exporting and importing countries will lead to a reduction in the share of traditional currencies in international payments, he added.

The US dollar still remains preeminent in global trade; more than 80 percent is settled in dollars and 60 percent in international reserves. However, in 2014, the yuan leaped to nine percent of international settlements, which gives a chance that its role in the world financial system will become more important.

“There is a reason to believe that this trend will continue in the coming years and the role of the yuan will increase rapidly not only in international trade, but as the currency of international reserves of the central banks,” he said.

China’s decision to establish and lead the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is “the real crux of Beijing’s current long-term international economic and financial strategy,” Brendan O’Reilly, China-based writer and educator told RT.

“Now Beijing is making its own global bank that can compete with Western-dominated institutions,” he said.

Fifty-seven countries have been approved as founding members of AIIB with Russia expected to become the bank’s third largest participant.

“I think Russia’s participation in AIIB will have a positive impact on economic and trade cooperation between the two countries,” said Prosviryakov. “One of the bank’s main tasks is financing infrastructure projects, a large part of which will be located on the territory of Russia. Investments in infrastructure will contribute to the development of bilateral trade, which will increase the likelihood of achieving the ambitious goal of the two countries to increase the turnover to $200 billion dollars by 2020.”

Even US allies such as Germany and the UK have signed on despite American objections, O’Reilly said.

“If the AIIB succeeds in its long-term goals of supporting Eurasian transport and trade infrastructure, then China, Russia, and many other states stand to benefit enormously,” he said.
